
#31 Wolfpack Opens Conference Play with Win at Wake

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. --- 31st-ranked NC State women’s tennis opened conference play with a 6-1 victory over #59 Wake Forest Sunday, led by singles wins from #23 Sanaa Bhambri and #76 Sandhya Nagaraj.
The win marks the third of the year over ranked opponents this year for NC State (7-1, 1-0 ACC), adding to victories over Auburn and Minnesota.
NC State captured the doubles point despite a Wake Forest upset over seventh-ranked Nagaraj and Bhambri. The Wolfpack’s top-ranked doubles team fell 8-4 to the 35th-ranked team of Duncan and Talbert, 8-4.
Tatiana Illova and Lenka Hojckova remained undefeated as a team this spring by securing an 8-6 win against Wake’s Cutillo/Malvehy combo. Ashley Miller teamed with Pack newcomer Tanvi Shah to drop Pavelec/Bercyte 8-6.
Bhambri and Nagaraj rebounded in singles play by defeating Wake’s top two. Bhambri triumphed in a third-set tiebreaker to defeat 50th-ranked Martina Pavelec 3-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-4), while Nagaraj ran away with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Kathryn Talbert.
Hojckova and Illova each scored their second wins of the day, as Hojckova sealed the match for the Pack with her 6-4, 6-4 decision over Kayla Duncan, and Illova topped Ryann Cutillo 6-3, 6-2.
Christy Sipes improved to 8-0 on the spring with a 6-1, 6-4 win against Anna Mydlowska. Joelle Kissell suffered her first loss of the spring against 88th-ranked Emilee Malvehy, 6-0, 6-4. Kissell falls to 7-1 on the spring in singles competition.
The Wolfpack returns home on March 4 to host fourth-ranked Duke beginning at 4 p.m. in Pullen Park.
