BLACKSBURG, Va. – The last event of the day was the most successful for the NC State men’s track and field team at the ACC Indoor Track and Field Championships, as the Wolfpack surged into third place after the second day of competition.
Host Virginia Tech leads the men’s race with 52 points, followed by eight-time defending champion Florida State with 33 and the Wolfpack with 30.5 points. The NC State women’s team is tied for eighth after the second day with 17 points.
Anchored by a 3:57.39 final leg by sophomore Ryan Hill, the distance medley relay team turned in a time of 9:43.31 Saturday night in the final event of the second day of the three-day event at Virginia Tech’s Rector Field House.
Senior Adam Henken, a transfer from Kentucky, opened the DMR with a time of 3:00.17 in the 1,200-meter opening leg, a tenth of a second behind Virginia Tech’s Eddie Judge. Junior Miles Walker grabbed the lead with a 48.81-second performance in the 400 meters.
Junior Gregory Dame fell back a little in the 800 meters, but turned the race over to Hill. The three-time All-American from Hickory, N.C., blew away the field in the final leg, breaking the four-minute barrier in the metric mile, a full three seconds ahead of every other anchor runner.
The women’s DMR team set a school record with a time of 11:34.15, finishing sixth in the event. Sophomore Erin Mercer, freshman Kenyetta Iyevbele, junior Tiayonna Blackmon and freshman Lillian Griebesland competed for the Wolfpack.
Two NC State men earned All-ACC honors, as redshirt freshman Andrew Colley was second in the 5,000-meter run and sophomore Kris Kornegay-Gober was third in the high jump. The top three finishers and ties in each event earn All-ACC recognition.
Colley’s time of 14:09.12 edged out Florida State’s Michael Fout by three-hundredths of a second for second place, earning the team eight points.
Kornegay-Gober garnered his second consecutive All-ACC honors with a career-best leap of 6-feet, 10 ¾-inches. He was behind Maryland’s Dwight Barbiasz and Jon Hill. Teammate Kwame Boatwright finished 10th in the event and freshman Christian Council was 15th.
Sophomore sprinter T.J. Graham turned in a career-best 6.65 seconds in the 60-meter dash, winning his heat and advancing to Saturday’s finals. Later in the evening, both Graham and sophomore Benjamin Major III won their preliminary heats in the 200-meter dash, earning them a spot in Saturday’s finals.
Graham had the third-fastest time of the day at 21.29 seconds, while Major was just a shade behind at 21.31. They will now face off against Florida State senior Brandon Byram and Maurice Mitchell, who had the day’s two fastest times and have posted two of the three fastest times in the nation in the event this season (20.70 and 20.73 in earlier events). Graham’s fastest time this year is 20.90 seconds and Major’s is 21.30.
In the 400-meter dash, sophomore Daniel Fretz advanced to Saturday’s final by posting a time of 48.87 seconds in his preliminary heat Friday afternoon.
Sophomore Grant Pearce earned points in the men’s weight throw with a toss of 58-feet, 1-inch to finish seventh in the event. Freshman Nathaniel Williams was 12th at 53-feet, 7-inches.
For the Wolfpack women, junior Andie Cozzarelli had a personal best in the 5,000-meter run, finishiing fourth with a time of 16:42.29, to earn five points for her team.
Sophomore Karimah Shepherd finished fifth with a career-best 20-feet, ½-inch leap in the long jump.
In the weight throw, two-time All-ACC performer Lawanda Henry did not defend her title in the 20-pound weight throw. She finished sixth with a throw of 58-feet, 10-inches, just ahead of seventh-place teammate Brittany Hampton’s throw of 58-feet, 5 ¾ inches. Their finishes netted five points for the women’s squad.
Junior Tiayonna Blackmon advanced to the finals in the 800-meter run with a season-best time of 2:10.25.
Saturday’s final day of action begins at 11 a.m. in the field events and noon in the running events.
