While most of her teammates are preparing for and taking final exams, Kirsty Grant is playing softball in South Africa for the Canadian Junior National team as the squad competes in the International Softball Federation (ISF) 19 and under world championships.
Grant, a biology major, worked with NC State professors and took all of her exams in November so that she might represent her country throughout the month of December in South Africa.
"We are so excited that Kirsty gets to take part in this experience," said head coach Lisa Navas. "It is a great honor to represent your country, and we are so proud of her. We wish her and Canada the best, except when they play the USA, of course."
In fact, Canada will take on the United States tomorrow as both squads open up pool play and begin the quest for the championship.
So far, Grant and Canada has played two games, going 1-1. The squad notched a 13-0 shutout against host South Africa before falling 2-1 to Australia. The Oakville, Ontario native has played crucial roles in both match ups, scoring a run in the first game and posting a hit and gunned down a base runner from behind the plate in the loss to Australia.
Team Canada will continue to play games against the eight teams in its pool, which include Puerto Rico, China, New Zealand, South Africa, Botswana and the Czech Republic in addition to the United States, until Dec. 15. After the 15th, official tournament play and elimination will begin.

Wolfpack softball opens up its regular season Feb. 10 in Athens, Ga., against Utah State.
