CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - 23rd-ranked NC State women’s golf kept pace with some of the best teams in the nation through day one of the Tar Heel Invitational, finishing tied for seventh of 18 and firing a 3-over par 291 on the par-72, 6,285 yard UNC Finley Golf Course.
"There’s a general feeling on the team that we can stay positive and we can keep doing better," said NC State head coach Page Marsh. "[The team]'s driven to be the best they can be and it’s coming from within. I’m proud of how well they’re representing the university."
Freshman Augusta James, already ranking in the Golfweek top-100 after only two career events, certainly made her mark among an elite field, finishing solo ninth on a 2-under 70. James will chase LSU’s Madelene Sagstrom, Wake Forest’s Cheyenne Woods, and South Carolina’s Katie Burnett who all fired 4-under par 68s in the opening round.
"Augusta’s the type of player that’s never satisfied, even today she was asking the coaches what we saw, what could she do better, and we have a lot of players on this team like that," said Marsh. "For her, I think continuing to be patient will be a priority for the weekend."
Freshman Vivian Tsui and sophomore Brittany Marchand logged a pair of 1-over par 73s to claim shares of26th overall, helping NC State’s 291 team score which placed the Pack tied in seventh with Michigan State.
The Wolfpack holds leads over No. 5 Virginia, No. 11 Duke, No. 36 Arkansas, No. 40 Tennessee, No. 46 Tulane, No. 47 Notre Dame, No. 48 Coastal Carolina, and Chattanooga. No. 10 Alabama’s 7-under 281 leads the team competition after the first round.
Junior Amanda Baker and sophomore Ana Menendez settled into a tie in 52nd place with two rounds of 3-over par 75.
"I've just been telling the team to think about the positive things, and to build on those over the weekend," said Marsh. "They want to shore up some areas for tomorrow, but for us it’s about playing each shot to the best of our abilities."
