Chapel Hill, N.C. -
NC State rose to fifth place in the team standings behind freshman Augusta James’s 3-under par 69 in the second round of the Tar Heel Invitational Saturday.
James climbed from solo ninth into a tie for fourth on the individual leaderboard thanks to a 2-under 34 on the back nine. Heading into the final round, James trails leader Hannah Collier of Alabama by four shots.
“Today was all about a great effort on the team’s part, making up ground late on the back side,” said NC State head coach Page Marsh. “They were patient and mentally tough all day long, but they really made it count over the last few holes.”
NC State’s top-three scorers, James, Vivian Tsui, and Ana Menendez combined to go 6-under over the final nine holes, helping the Pack leapfrog South Carolina and Wake Forest.
Tsui gained 12 spots on Saturday, notching a 1-under 71 to navigate her way into a tie for 14th. The freshman finished with a flourish in the second round, banking three birdies over the final four holes. Menendez matched Tsui with a 71 of her own to improve to 27th.
Junior Amanda Baker’s 78 rounded out the scoring for NC State’s 1-over par 289 in the second round. Baker dropped to 74th, while Brittany Marchand slid to 66th with a 79 on day two.
NC State entered the Tar Heel Invitational ranked 14th-nationally according to Golfstat, 23rd by Golfword, and 26th by Golfweek. The Pack will look to improve its standing among the nation’s best and cement a strong showing during tomorrow’s final round. Live stats are available at www.Golfstat.com.
