GREENSBORO, N.C. – Sophomore Albin Choi earned his third collegiate victory, and NC State finished second at the UNCG Bridgestone Collegiate on Sunday at Forest Oaks Country Club.
Choi, from Toronto, Canada, backed up yesterday's 2-under 70 with a final-round 69 today to earn a two-shot victory over Michigan's Matt Thompson. Two others tied at 2-under 142 as only four players broke par during the rain-shortened 36-hole tournament.
The collegiate was reduced from 54 to 36 holes yesterday due to the poor weather in the Greensboro area on Saturday.
NC State fired a 2-over 290 today to move up four spots and finish as the runner-up to Iowa State, who won by five strokes with a two-day total of 6-over 582. The Wolfpack defeated Virginia Tech and North Carolina from the ACC, and five clubs from the SEC.
Choi pieced together a very steady round for his ninth career top-10 finish in only 17 college events. After a bogey at his second hole of the day at No. 10, he ran off four birdies and made par the rest of the way for his first win of the season.
Freshman Andrew Decker notched his first career top-20 placement by tying for 12th at 2-over 146. He posted a final-round 2-under 70 on Sunday. He had three birdies on his card today, and the only blemish was a bogey on his final hole of the day at No. 8.
Senior Mark McMillen bounced back from Saturday's 77 with an even-par 72 today to finish tied for 27th at 5-over 149. He had a team-high five birdies on Sunday.
Senior Chad Day tied for 56th at 9-over 153, and red-shirt freshman James Chapman wound up tied for 75th at 13-over 157.
Senior Hunter Howell competed as an individual and tied for 67th at 11-over 155.
The Wolfpack, playing without All-American Mitchell Sutton for all but one tournament this fall because of injury, recorded three top-4 finishes in four events.
Choi will compete in the Western Refining College All-America Golf Classic on Nov. 20-22 at the El Paso Country Club.
NC State is back in action at the Puerto Rico Classic in February in Rio Grande, P.R.
