GAINESVILLE, FLA. --- Nationally 13th-ranked NC State gymnastics fell to top-ranked Florida and 23rd-ranked Penn State Friday at the O’Connell Center.
The Pack (1-3) posted a 194.075 on its first road trip of the season. The total marks NC State’s lowest output of the year, though it would have represented a season-high at this point in 2010.
“I wasn’t disappointed in the score, the only thing I was disappointed in was that we counted a fall on the floor,” said NC State head coach Mark Stevenson. “I thought we did a good job with Brittany Vontz and Brooke Barr missing the meet. This early in the season you try to do the best you can. Overall, we had a really nice meet.”
NC State’s best showing of the night came on vault, where a team total of 48.800 was boosted by career-highs of 9.85 by Diahanna Ham and 9.8 by Stephanie Ouellette. Ham and Ouellette finished sixth and ninth, respectively, against some of the nation’s best who produced three scores of 9.9 or better.
On the uneven bars, Kristen Harabedian made her second appearance of the season, leading the team with a 9.7. NC State finished the rotation with a 48.350.
On beam, Jess Panza continued her trend of leading the team in scoring by notching her third-straight 9.775 to finish sixth overall as the Pack accumulated a 48.475 total. Diahanna Ham’s 9.7 on beam was also good for a season-high.
Panza also led the team in the floor exercise, capping the meet by equaling her season-high of 9.85 to earn a share of fifth place. In her first-career appearance, freshman Emily Anderson backed up Panza by contributing a 9.8 for the team’s second-best score of the rotation.
Ouellette finished third representing NC State in the all-around with her 38.900.
Junior Alex Williams made her season-debut, posting a 9.75 on vault and 9.675 on bars. Hannah Fallanca vaulted for the first time in her career, scoring a 9.7.
NC State returns to action February 4 with a home meet against Iowa State, scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
