McPherson, Henry Get Seconds at Hokie

BLACKSBURG, Va. - Sophomore Lewis McPherson finished second in the men's 1,000-meter run to lead the Wolfpack in the final day of the Hokie Invitational Saturday at Virginia Tech's Rector Field House. He finished with a time of 2:28.14, behind Tennessee junior Joe Franklin's 2:26.88.
Teammate Gregory Dame was fourth in the same event with a time of 2:28.56.
Redshirt freshman Kenyetta Iyevbele led a strong performance by the Wolfpack in the women's 1,000-meter run. She finished fourth in a time of 2:54.52, followed closely by teammates Tiayonna Blackmon at 2:54.63 in fifth place and Erin Mercer in eighth place.
Junior thrower Lawanda Henry followed her victory Friday in the weight throw with a second-place finish in the shot put, with a toss of 50-feet, 10 ¼ inches. The junior from Dunn, N.C., has now finished first or second in the six events she has competed in this season in the Wolfpack's three indoor meets.
In the men's shot put, former NC State competitor Mitchell Pope, competing unattached, won the event with a throw of 60-feet, 3 3/4-inches.
Junior Karimah Shepherd was third in the women's long jump with a leap of 19-feet, 5 ¼ inches.
Sprinter T.J. Graham was fifth in the men's 200-meter dash, a one-spot improvement from last week's performance at the Virginia Tech Invitational. His time of 21.54 seconds shaved more than half a second from his time of 22.06 from last week.
