Charlottesville, Va. -
Led by newcomer Sanaa Bhambri’s 3-0 debut as a member of the Wolfpack, the NC State women’s tennis team opened the 2010-11 season at the UVa Fall Invitational in Charlottesville, Va. Friday.
"The team really came out strong in the first round of matches today," said NC State head coach Hans Olsen. "They showed a lot of good things that I was looking for, on the court. I think we were all excited about getting started with some competition and getting the competitive juices flowing again."
Bhambri dispatched Josefin Hjertquist of VCU 6-4, 6-3, and Lindsey Hardenbergh 7-5, 3-6, 6-4, before teaming up with junior Sandhya Nagaraj for an 8-2 win in doubles play.
Bhambri and Nagaraj will return to the court at 9 a.m. Saturday for quarterfinal doubles before Bhambri tries to advance in the singles bracket at 12:15 p.m. against Virginia’s Emily Fraser.
Also picking up wins for the Wolfpack were Nagaraj (6-3, 5-0 ret.) over VCU’s Ana Bara, freshman Joelle Kissell (6-0, 6-3), sophomore Tana Illova (6-1, 6-3), freshman Christy Sipes (6-3, 6-2) and sophomore Chloe Smith (6-2, 6-4).
Freshmen Sipes and Kissell scored NC State’s second doubles victory on the day, earning an 8-1 victory over Virginia’s Teltumbde and Spooner.
I'm looking for everybody to settle in to the draw a little bit more the rest of the weekend," said Olsen. "I want us to continue doing what were doing, but see if we can keep that focus for longer periods of time to get the results we want."
Play resumes Saturday morning at 9 a.m. before concluding Sunday in Charlottesville. The full 2010 UVa Fall Invitational draw can be viewed by clicking HERE.
