Since its opening just last year in 2009, NC State's Lonnie Poole Golf Course has received rave reviews as one of the top collegiate golf courses built in recent years. That was reaffirmed this week when the facility was named the 22nd best campus course in the nation by Golfweek Magazine.
The stunning layout was designed by the Arnold Palmer Design Company (including Erik Larsen and Brandon Johnson, both NC State graduates). With breathtaking views of the Raleigh skyline and the award winning Centennial Campus, the golf course has become a favorite in the golf community.
Lonnie Poole ranked third among all ACC schools, and was ranked ahead of UNC's Finley Golf Course and Virginia's Birdwood Golf Course.
The home venue for the men's and women's varsity golf teams here at NC State, Lonnie Poole serves as both a training and recruiting foundation for head coaches Richard Sykes and Page Marsh.
Arnold Palmer himself said back at the 2008 Golf Coaches Association of America's Hall of Fame Awards Dinner that, "NC State will have the best golf course in the ACC."
A few more years of growth on the golf course, and the addition of a state-of-the art clubhouse will certainly enhance the plaudits of this magnificent 200-acre layout in the southeast corner of Centennial Campus.
A course must be part of a school's recreational life in terms of preferential access for students, faculty, and alumni in order to qualify.
