KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. - The NC State men's golf team is in second place after two rounds of The Invitational at The Ocean Course.
NC State shot a 36-hole team score of +9 (289-296=585) and is only one stroke behind first-day leader Notre Dame (+8, 584).
The Wolfpack held an eight-stroke lead after the morning round over Vanderbilt.
Juniors Mark McMillen and Chad Day led the Wolfpack's effort by shooting +5 (149) and are tied for 14th among the field of 72 competitors.
McMillen's morning round 72 was an eventful one filled with five birdies, but was offset with three bogeys and a double at the par-5 11th. Round two was a little more consistent with 14 pars and a birdie, but a triple and a double left him at +5 (77). His two round total finds him at +5 (72-77=149).
Meanwhile, Day's first round 71 featured three birdies, including back-to-back on holes 16 and 17. The second round saw him shoot a +6 (78). He had a pair of birdies, but also had a four-hole stretch that wound up five-over. He did rebound with seven straight pars to find a little more consistency.
Brandon Detweiler, a shot back of McMillen and Day, is tied for 17th at +6 (79-71=150). The lone senior on the squad got his final campaign off to a bit of a rocky start with a seven-over 79, but bounced back nicely with a strong afternoon round of one-under 71. The Akron, Pa., native had five birdies, including three straight at Nos. 9, 10 and 11.
Sophomore Mitchell Sutton is tied for 21st, one back of Detweiler, at +7 (79-72=151). He also had a tough go at it during the morning round with a seven-over 79, but like Detweiler, played much better in round two with an even-par 72. Sutton had two birdies and two bogeys in the afternoon.
Freshman Albin Choi made his much anticipated debut today and finished round one with a three-over 75. The Toronto native posted five birdies, including one on his first collegiate hole, the par-5 7th hole. But he ran into trouble on the following hole with a triple bogey.,
His second round started off with a pair of birdies in his first three holes, but a 10 at the par-5 16th set him back. He settled down from there playing even the rest of the way and will begin Tuesday's final round in a tie for 21st at +7 (75-76=151).
Junior Graham Baillargeon also made his Wolfpack debut and finished round one with a (-1) 71. He overcame four bogeys with five birdies. The afternoon round was a much different story with a +9 (81). The Michigan State transfer struggled with four double bogeys and stands tied for 29th at +8 (71-81=152).
All six NC State golfers will begin Tuesday's final 18 holes in the top-30.
This tournament is being played at the par-72, 7,504-yard Ocean Course, the host of the 2012 PGA Championship, and the No. 4 ranked Public Course by Golf Digest.
