Charlottesville, Va. -
Julian Sullivan got the fall portion of the 2010-11 NC State men’s tennis season opened with a bang, capturing the purple bracket singles title at the UVa Invitational, Sept. 10-12 at Synder Tennis Center. Rafael Paez also placed fourth overall in the white singles, while Rob Lowe and Sean Weber both took fourth in consolation rounds.
“Heading into the tournament this weekend we had set some goals for the guys by which to measure their play and progression,” said head coach Jon Choboy. “Fortunately we picked up some good wins, but even more important for the fall season is that we saw guys improve in areas that we have been focusing on. Right now we are really pleased with the progression that we are seeing.”
Sullivan downed Longwood’s Crescente Lesser, 6-4, 6-2, on Sunday to grab the top spot in the purple round, as Paez fell to Nebraska’s Andre Stenger, 7-5, 6-1, in the white pairing. Weber fell, 6-2, 6-7 (5), to William & Mary’s Anton Andersson, while Lowe got upended in default to Wake Forest’s Amogh Prabhaker. Both Weber and Lowe took fourth place in the orange and gold consolation brackets respectively.
“It’s really nice to see Julian win the singles title because he’s been playing mostly doubles this fall,” said Choboy. “To see him go out there and play some singles, winning some three setters, is great. We are seeing some good play from him, and we want to build on that. We are looking forward to seeing what he can do this year.”
In all, the Pack collected nine singles wins and placed two student-athletes in the top four of their respective singles brackets.
NC State will return to the court this coming weekend, Sept. 17-19, in nearby Cary and the Nike Fab Four hosted by Duke.
