TENERIFE, SPAIN – NC State’s Jaime Pulgar won three matches in the qualifying round and has since won two bouts in the main draw to advance into the quarterfinals round at the Spain F20 Futures ITA tournament. Pulgar had no professional points prior to entering NC State.
“It’s big to win your first professional points,” said head coach Jon Choboy. “He’s improved so much in his first two years at NC State. Jaime’s going to continue to work hard over the summer, and this is just going to carry over into next year.
“He is really playing at a high level.”
Pulgar’s three wins in qualifying play punched his ticket into his first main draw at a professional tournament. He then topped Arnau Dachs, ranked No. 1620 in the world, 6-3, 6-1, before besting Miguel-Angel Lopez Jaen, 6-3, 6-2. Lopez Jaen is currently ranked No. 358 in the world in singles play, having made it to the round of 64 at the 2008 French Open.
If Pulgar is able to win his next match he will automatically earn a spot in the main draw at the upcoming Spain F21 Futures event.
Pulgar, who picked up all-conference honors for the Pack this season, had an impressive season for the Wolfpack. Playing at the No. 1 singles throughout the year, he went 14-9 and 6-5 in the ACC. He picked up wins over No. 5 Guillermo Gomez (Georgia Tech), No. 38 Yoann Re (Virginia Tech), No. 48 Diego Cubas (South Carolina) and No. 50 Jason Jung (Michigan).
Pulgar also went 14-8 in doubles matches, playing primarily at No. 2 and No. 3.
