PUERTO RICO – Former NC State men’s swimmer Dan Velez recently set a new Puerto Rican national record in the 50-meter breaststroke. Competing at the Campeonatos Nacionales, Velez took first in the event with a time of 28.87, besting the old record of 28.90 set by Arsenio Lopez in July of 2005.
“We are very proud of Dan for all of his achievements, especially setting a new national record in Puerto Rico,” said NC State head swimming and diving coach Brooks Teal. “Dan was a tremendous competitor for us, as well as an asset to our program. It’s very exciting to see his career continue to flourish.”
Velez also competed in the 100 and 200-meter breaststrokes, as well as the 200 individual medley.
Velez was a member of the Puerto Rico Olympic team that competed at the 2008 Summer Games in Beijing, where he won his heat in the 100 breaststroke and set his first Puerto Rican national record.
