Pulgar Selected as Alternate for NCAA Championships
5/6/2010 12:00:00 AM | Men's Tennis
RALEIGH, N.C. – Jaime Pulgar, currently ranked No. 61 nationally in singles play by the ITA, has been selected as the first alternate for competition in the 2010 NCAA Men’s Tennis Singles Championships. Action will be held May 26-31 at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga.
As the first alternate, Pulgar is in prime position to move into the field of 64 should any of the 16 automatic qualifiers or 48 at-large selections suffer an injury before or during team competition at the NCAA’s. A handful of alternates generally move into the field of play by the time singles action begins.
“For Jaime to move up this quickly and beat the players that he’s beaten, he’s put himself in a great position,” said head coach Jon Choboy. “Jaime worked his tail off this year, both in practice and in matches. As the first alternate he has a great chance of making the field of 64.”
Pulgar, a sophomore from Madrid, Spain, was named All-Atlantic Coast Conference in late April after going 14-9 (6-5 ACC) at the No. 1 spot for the Wolfpack throughout the season. In singles play he downed seven ranked opponents, five in straight-sets, including No. 5 Guillermo Gomez of Georgia Tech.
All NCAA singles matches shall be the best of three sets. Regular scoring and a 12-point tiebreaker at six games all will be used for all matches.
