BLACKSBURG, Va. – NC State bowed out of the ACC Championships with a 7-1 loss to North Carolina on Friday, May 14 at Tech Softball Park. Play was delayed for 47 minutes in the bottom of the third due to lightning.
The defeat sends the Wolfpack to 28-27, while the Tar Heels improve to 40-17.
Alyssa Allbritten provided all of the offense for the Wolfpack with one swing, belting a solo home run with two outs in the seventh inning to end Danielle Spaudling’s (19-4) no-hit bid at the last moment. Lindsay Campana (17-12) took the loss, allowing four earned runs in 3 2/3 innings of work, while Stephanie Call gave up three earned runs in 2 1/3 innings.
The long ball gave the Tar Heels a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth, with Kelli Wheeler hitting a solo shot and Brittany McKinney later adding a three-run stroke over the wall in left. Campana was then lifted for Call.
North Carolina moved the score to 7-0 in the fifth as Brittany Robinson lifted another solo homer, while Spaulding later drove in two more with a bases loaded single.
NC State’s fate is now in the hands of the NCAA selection committee. The NCAA Tournament bracket will be announced live on ESPNU at 10 p.m. this Sunday, May 16.
