RALEIGH, N.C. – NC State and Maryland split a doubleheader at the Curtis & Jacqueline Dail Softball Stadium on Saturday, April 24. The Wolfpack ended the day at 28-22 (9-8 ACC), while the Terrapins stand at 28-19 (6-10 ACC).
The Pack grabbed a 2-0 win in the opening tilt, behind a strong pitching performance from Lindsay Campana (17-8) who fanned six. Kerry Hickey (16-9) picked up the loss. Alyssa Allbritten and Allison Presnell both went 2-for-3 at the plate.
Both teams made some tremendous defensive plays throughout the game, with each squad gunning down a combined four players at the plate.
Defensive awareness kept the Terps from scoring in the top of the fourth when Alex Schultz attempted to score from first on a Kerry Hickey double into the right-center gap. Landon Warren quickly relayed a throw into Alyssa Ishibashi at second, who fired out Schultz at the plate with a strike to Allbritten.
The Pack took care of all the scoring in the sixth. Allbritten reached with a leadoff single and Lauren Peters took her place at first, quickly moving to second on a Bridget Desbois sac-bunt. Claudia Cooper then sent a grounder to third, but Shultz’s throw to first was way off target, allowing Peters to score from second. Morgan Barbour then ran for Cooper, eventually scoring when Stephanie Call singled to left and Vangie Galindo bobbled the recovery.
Schultz provided all the scoring in game two with one swing of the bat, giving Maryland a 2-0 victory of its own. Call (8-9) got the loss, while Kendra Knight (11-9) picked up the decision.
The Terrapins threatened in the fourth, loading the bases with one out. But Call struck out Hickey and induced an inning-ending grounder from Nadine Blackie to get out of the jam.
Schultz eventually handed Maryland a 2-0 lead with a two-run shot to right-center in the sixth. Kathy McLaughlin singled in the prior at-bat, coming around to score on Schultz’s long ball.
NC State and Maryland will wrap up the series tomorrow, Sunday, April 25, with a 1 p.m. first pitch. Fans are encouraged to check GoPack.com in the event that weather forces a time change.
