CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – NC State pounded Virginia for a 9-0 victory after dropping the first game of a twin bill 4-1 in 10 innings on Saturday, April 17. Stephanie Call (7-7) allowed two hits in the second inning and didn’t allow a single base runner the rest of the way in picking up the decision in game two, helping herself out by going 2-for-4 at the plate with three RBIs.
The Wolfpack stands at 25-20 (8-6 ACC) after the split, while the Cavaliers move to 26-18 (8-5 ACC).
The Pack responded in a big way in the second game, winning 9-0 behind three RBIs each from Call and Alyssa Allbritten.
Call helped her own cause in the top of the second with a leadoff home run to straightaway center, her 12th on the year, to give the Pack a quick 1-0 lead.
The Pack added a second run in the third as Landon Warren lead off with a base hit and later scored on a Bridget Desbois fielder’s choice.
NC State hung up three runs on four hits in the top of the sixth, pushing the score to 5-0. Allbritten and Desbois got the rally started with back-to-back base hits, and Call knocked both in with a stand up triple before scoring on a passed ball.
Allbritten made it an 8-0 ball game in the seventh, clocking a three-run bomb to center and bringing in Warren and Allison Presnell, both of whom had singled earlier. Claudia Cooper eventually brought in Morgan Barbour to score with another base hit.
Stephanie Coates (1-2) suffered the loss.
A walkoff homer in the bottom of the 10th lifted the Cavaliers past NC State, 4-1, in the first game. Lindsay Campana (16-8) went the distance, striking out seven. Melanie Mitchell (20-13) picked up the complete-game decision.
Desbois capitalized for the Pack in the top of the sixth, pushing an RBI base hit through the left side and sending Warren across the plate to give NC State a lead 1-0 lead. Warren led off the inning with a bunt single.
UVa immediately knotted the score at 1-all in the bottom half of the inning. Lauren McCaskey walked and moved up to second on a Nicole Koren sac-bunt, and Sarah Tacke followed by roping a triple to the wall in right.
Warren saved the game for the Pack in the bottom of the seventh, gunning down the potential game-winning run in Abby Snyder at the plate as she attempted to score from second on an Alex Skinkis single with two outs.
Giannina Cipolloni ended it with one swing in the bottom of the 10th. Skinkis singled up the middle and moved to second on a sac-bunt from Alexa Martinez. A wild pitch from Campana then put Skinkis on third, and the Pack intentionally walked Tacke. Cipolloni followed with a three-run shot over the wall down the line in right, handing UVa a 4-1 decision.
NC State and Virginia will wrap up the series tomorrow, Sunday, April 18, at 1 p.m.
