4/13/2010 12:00:00 AM | Track
The Wolfpack’s Ryan Hill, a red-shirt freshman in track, has been named the Outdoor Performer of the Week by the Atlantic Coast Conference after setting a school record in the 1500 meters on Saturday at the Joe Hilton UNC Invitational. Hill, who was a cross country All-American in 2009, posted a 3:40.81 mark to win the event - the fastest time in the nation thus far in 2010.
Hill was competing in a very competitive field, as five of the top eight times in the nation this year in the 1500 meters were posted in that race at Chapel Hill. His 13:56.41 time in the 5,000-meter run, which he recorded two weeks ago at the adidas Raleigh Relays, tops the conference and ranks 13th nationally.
The Hickory native, who was also the 2008 ACC Cross Country Rookie of the Year, broke Joe Wilkins mark of 3:42.70 that was set in 1972. Hill did not compete in track in 2009 as he was named a member of the US Junior World Cross Country team and was competing in the world championships in Amman, Jordan.
