Raleigh, N.C. - The No. 44 NC State men's tennis won its second matchup of a doubleheader against UNC Asheville, 6-1 on Sunday, March 7. Earlier the Wolfpack beat No. 61 VCU 4-3.
The win puts head coach Jon Choboy one victory away from his 100th at NC State.
Today marks the second of three doubleheaders during the season.
"I've scheduled doubleheaders my whole career," said Choboy. "We're trying to prepare out team for down the road when things get tougher."
The Wolfpack showed no signs of fatigues in doubles, taking all three matches. Rob Lowe and Frideric Prandecki took down Matt Waissen and Jonas Brobeck, 8-5. Fernando Banos and Jaime Pulgar beat Nicolai Nonnenbroich and Nathan White, 8-5 to seal the doubles point. Will Rollinson saw his first action of the spring with David Chermak, and won 7-5 due to Adrien Langeard and Thomas Rees retiring.
Winning the doubles point is something Choboy really stresses to his players.
"The doubles point is critical," said Choboy. We felt going in to today it was important. That first match in particular we played very well, and it was the deciding factor."
In singles, No. 125 D. Thomson continued his stellar play this season with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over White. Lowe easily beat Brobeck in straight sets, 6-0, 6-2. No. 94 Pulgar had little problem defeating Nonnenbroich, 6-2, 6-1. His win also gave the Pack another its second victory of the day.
Rafael Paez took down Rees in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3. Hodgson soon followed with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Waissen. With the sun slowly setting, Akash Gujarati fell to Ryan Matthews, 6-4, 1-6, (13-11).
The Wolfpack moves to 8-2 on the year. The Pack's next match will be a doubleheader beginning at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 13 against No. 57 William & Mary, followed by Norfolk State at 2:30 p.m.
