NC State Hosts Doubleheader: No. 44 NC State will play host to No. 61 VCU and UNC Asheville on Sunday, March 7 beginning at 11:00 a.m.
The Series Versus VCU: Sunday’s matchup against Virginia Commonwealth will be the sixth matchup in the series, but the first time a Jon Choboy coached team will take the court against VCU. The Rams own a 3-2 series advantage over the Wolfpack. The series began back in 1985 with NC State taking the matchup 7-2. The Pack last played VCU in 1997, losing 6-1.
The Series Against UNC Asheville: NC State will be meeting UNC Asheville for the sixth time in history. This also happens to be the first time a Choboy coached team will face the Bulldgos. The Wolfpack has a perfect 5-0 record against the Bulldogs. The first matchup took place in 1983, with the Pack winning 7-2. The two last met back in 2000, with NC State sweeping UNC Asheville 7-0.
Nothing Like the Outdoors: Beginning with the doubleheader against VCU and UNC Asheville, NC State will play the rest of its matchups outside. The matches will only be moved inside if there is inclement weather. As of now the plan for March 7 is to play the first match outside and the second indoors.
Wolfpack Gets Fourth Sweep: NC State continued its dominance against Elon with a 7-0 victory back on Friday, February 19. In the five meetings, the Wolfpack has never lost to the Phoenix.
The Importance of the Doubles Point: In college tennis, winning the doubles point goes a long way toward winning the match. For NC State it’s no different. As the season progresses the Wolfpack are 5-0 when winning the doubles point and 1-2 when losing it. Over head coach Jon Choboy’s seven plus seasons in Raleigh, N.C. the Pack are 76-20 when the doubles point is won.
Two Earn Singles Rankings: Jaime Pulgar and Dave Thomson entered the ITA singles rankings on Feb. 18. Pulgar, who is 4-2 and has defeated two ranked opponents is now ranked No. 94 in the country. D. Thomson has started his freshman season 7-1, which has earned him a national rank of No. 125.
