RALEIGH, N.C. – NC State softball will open the conference portion of its schedule this weekend at home against Virginia Tech at the Curtis & Jacqueline Dail Softball Stadium. The Wolfpack and Hokies will square off for two games beginning at 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 20, before wrapping up the series with a 1 p.m. bout on Sunday, March 21. Live stats for all three games will be available via GoPack.com, while Saturday’s action will be broadcast live online via the Pack Pass video stream.
The first 250 fans in attendance on Saturday will be able to participate in softball bingo, while Sunday will serve as Little League Softball Day with a free youth softball mini clinic following the game for eighth graders and younger.
NC State (16-11) had its four-game winning streak snapped at Charlotte this past Thursday, dropping both games of a doubleheader. Stephanie Call continues to lead the Wolfpack at the plate, batting .359 with 10 home runs and 25 RBIs. She is just three long balls shy of tying the all-time program record for home runs in a single season, shared by Jen Chamberlin (2006, 07) and Heather Gelbard (2007) with 13.
Lindsay Campana (10-4) boasts a 0.67 ERA and 143 K’s in 94 innings of action. Only nine of her 21 runs allowed have been earned. Call (5-2, 2.81 ERA) has won four of her last five starts in the circle, while Morgan Peeler (1-5, 4.20 ERA) has also seen significant action.
Virginia Tech stands at 7-16, having lost five straight. Whitney Davis leads the Hokies with a .348 clip at the plate and 23 hits. Richelle McGarva holds team highs in home runs (5) and RBIs (11), while Ashton Ward has 10 RBIs of her own. Bkaye Smith has swiped seven bags in nine attempts.
VT has used four pitchers on the season, combining for a 2.62 ERA, however Jasmin Harrell (5-5, 2.73 ERA, 64.0 IP) and Kenzie Roark (2-9, 2.79 ERA, 62.2 IP) have logged the majority of innings.
The Wolfpack trails 7-8 in the all-time series between the two programs, with the Hokies having won the last five meetings. The two squads have not met since the 2008 ACC Championship game as last year’s regular season series at Virginia Tech was called off due to torrential downpour.
NC State will play a midweek doubleheader at UNC Greensboro next week before continuing conference action over the weekend at North Carolina.
