NC State Travels to South Carolina: No. 46 NC State will travel to No. 45 South Carolina on Tuesday, Feb. 9, with the match starting at 2:30 p.m.
The Series Versus South Carolina: Tuesday’s matchup will be the 46th meeting between NC State and South Carolina. This rivalry is the longest out of conference series for the Wolfpack. The series began in NC State’s inaguaral season in 1956 with a 6-3 win. The Pack played South Carolina last season, losing 5-2.
D. Thomson Undefeated: Dave Thomson has stayed undefeated during spring singles play, with a 6-0 record. He has played at the No. 3 and No. 4 spot and recorded a huge win over No. 53 Charlie Jones.
Hot Start: The Wolfpack has began the season 5-1, which is the best start since beginning the 2007 season 8-0.
First Road Win: For the first time this spring, the Wolfpack traveled on the road, winning at Old Dominion, 6-1. The Pack swept the doubles matches and only lost one singles match.
Pack Cruises Past Pirates: The Wolfpack beat East Carolina for the 26th time in 42 meetings with a 7-0 sweep. The Pack won all three doubles matches, while only one singles match went three sets.
Doubleheader Postponed: The Jan. 31 doubleheader against East Carolina and Charlotte was postponed due to snow. The matchup against East Carolina was rescheduled for the following Wednesday, while the Charlotte match has not set a date.
Upset of No. 33 Michigan: After losing the doubles point, the Wolfpack rebounded to win four of six singles matches to beat Michigan, 4-3. Jaime Pulgar got it started by beating No. 50 Jason Jung, 6-4, 6-3. Dominic Hodgson and Dave Thomson both won their matches in three sets, while Akash Gujarati clinched the victory with a 7-5, 6-2 win over Chris Cha.
Closer Than Score Indicated: NC State suffered its first loss of the spring season to No. 55 Vanderbilt, 6-1. However, the score could have easily gone in the Pack’s favor. With one doubles win already in the books, the tandem of Rob Lowe and Frideric Prandecki lost at No. 1 doubles, 9-8 (4), which would have given the Wolfpack the doubles point. While Dave Thomson won his match, the three other matches that went three sets all went to Vanderbilt. NC State was close on all three, which would have lifted the Pack to the win.
Pack Sweeps Doubleheader: Opening spring play, the Wolfpack took care of business against Gardner-Webb and North Carolina Central, winning both matches 7-0.
Four Make Debut: Fernando Banos, Dominic Hodgson, Rafael Paez and Dave Thomson all played in their first spring match for NC State on Sunday, Jan. 17th against Gardner-Webb. Hodgson and D. Thomson teamed up to win a match at No. 1 doubles against Gardner-Webb and at No. 2 doubles against North Carolina Central.
Choboy Approaches 100 Victories at State: Head coach Jon Choboy is getting close to his 100th victory at NC State. In his seven-plus seasons with the Wolfpack, Choboy has compiled a 96-96 record. Choboy is the only NC State men’s tennis coach to collect at least 20 wins in one season. He’s accomplish the feat twice, winning 20 matches in 2006 and 23 matches in 2007. Before becoming the Pack’s coach in 2003, Choboy had successful stops at Brown and Charleston Southern. In his 15-plus seasons, Choboy’s record is 226-165.
Atlantic Coast Conference: NC State is one of seven charter members of the ACC, which was founded on May 8, 1953. The conference has since expanded to 12 members. The ACC has long had tremendous success in all sports, including men’s tennis. 10 of the 12 men’s tennis programs placed in the final 2009 ITA Collegiate Tennis Rankings, proving that the ACC is the premier conference in the country.
