Swimming & Diving Falls at UNC

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The NC State swimming and diving team fell to North Carolina on Friday, Feb. 5, with the Wolfpack dropping by scores of 182-111 (men) and 118-175 (women).
The loss sends the Pack men to 5-2 (3-2 ACC), while the women fall to 7-2 (3-2 ACC). The No. 14 UNC men move to 10-1 (6-1 ACC), and the No. 15 women climb to 9-2 (6-1 ACC).
Nick Schauer tied the quickest swim on the team this season with a 51.23 in the 100 backstroke, while Gaites Brown’s 51.31 stands as the second fastest. Brown also posted the third-best 100 freestyle time on the year with a 46.66, while Brandon Kingston’s 4:10.29 in the 400 IM is third-best.
Hudson Rains posted the Pack’s top 3-meter dive on the year, winning the event with a 358.05 after taking second in the 1-meter dive with a 301.95. Matt Voell (50.66), Mike Seiferth (50.95) and Tyler Mills (52.81) took first through third in the 100 butterfly, after Seiferth’s 1:52.90 placed him second in the 200 butterfly. Dan Forsythe (2:04.99) and Greg Baskwell (2:05.15) placed second and third respectively in the 200 breaststroke, with Baskwell’s time marking the second quickest on the season. Conor Brennan, Brown, Voell and Travis Martinez ended the evening by taking the 200-freestyle relay with a 1:24.81.
Ashley Richter, Patrice Dason, Meg Thompson and Marifrances Henley posted the third-best 200-freestyle relay in school history with a 1:34.83 for first-place. Henley’s 10:12.31 for third in the 1000 freestyle is the second best mark on the team this year, while Maggie McEnerney’s 2:04.78 in the 200 butterfly is the third fastest.
Dason won the 100 butterfly with a 56.04, while Anna Linkenauger used a 4:27.71 to take first in the 400 IM. Hannah Hopkins posted the top mark in the 1-meter dive with a 257.62, while Kirstyn Shepler’s 131.37 was third. Henley (23.97) and Dason (24.06) finished second and third in the 50 freestyle, and Brianna Grover swiped second in the 100 backstroke thanks to a 57.64
Several student-athletes from NC State will resume competition this weekend, Feb. 6-7, at the 2010 Triangle College Cup in Chapel Hill against competition from North Carolina, Duke, Virginia Tech, Georgia Tech and Clemson.
