Martinez Wins ACC Championship; Men Finish Fifth

BLACKSBURG, Va. - Behind John Martinez' ACC Championship in the 3,000m, the NC State men's track and field team finished a strong fifth at the 2010 ACC Indoor Championships. Martinez ran a season-best 8:09.77 to win the event by almost four seconds for his first ACC Championship. He finished second in the 5,000m run on Friday to earn All-ACC honors in that event as well.
Martinez, a senior, also finished second in the 3,000m and the 5,000m last season at the indoor championships.
Senior A'Tolani Akinkuotu was second in the 60m dash to earn All-ACC honors with a 6.67. He was just 0.01 from winning the event. Akinkuotu ran a 6.60 in prelims on Friday to set a new school record and hit an NCAA Automatic Qualifying time in the event.
Freshman Ben Major ran a personal-best in the 200m with a 21.13 to finish fourth in his first ACC Championship. Major also ran a 6.82 in the 60m to finish eighth and score for the Wolfpack.
Senior Jason Jones just missed ACC honors with a fourth place finish in the shot put with a season-best mark of 57'05.75".
Kwame Boatwright was fifth on triple jump with a 49'03.50".
Ryan Hill and Bobby Moldovan finished fifth and sixth, respectively, in the 3,000m to score for the Wolfpack. Including Martinez' win in the event, the Pack had three of the top-6 spots in the meet.
