RALEIGH, N.C. - NC State head swimming and diving coach Brooks Teal announced today the signing of four student-athletes to the Wolfpack men's swimming program. Michael Camper, Billy Draves, Kyle Magee and John Newell will all serve as true freshmen during the 2011-12 season.
"We are very excited to be adding these four men to our program," said Teal. "All four are talented athletes but also have the character and integrity that we want to represent NC State. I am confident that they will enjoy outstanding careers with the Wolfpack and we look forward to their contributions to our team."
Camper, a native of Fredericksburg, Va., will arrive in Raleigh next year with his eyes on providing the Wolfpack with strength and depth at both mid-distance freestyle and backstroke events. A protégé of Bob Herlinger from the Rappahannock YMCA and one of the top prep swimmers in Virginia, Camper is a YMCA nationals finalist and junior national qualifier with top-eight finishes at Virginia high school state meets. Having selected NC State over East Carolina, Georgia Tech and West Virginia, Camper will pursue a degree in computer science.
Draves, out of Gilbertsville, Pa., will look to carve out a spot among the top butterfly specialists in the ACC. A YMCA nationals finalist and scholastic All-America selection, Draves will provide the Pack with great depth and expertise in butterfly swims. Draves, who chose NC State over Ohio State and Penn State, will study engineering.
Hailing from Eagleville, Pa., Magee is a junior national qualifier with only one full season of year-round swimming under his belt. Having competed for coach Stu Kukla of the Central Bucks Swim Team, Magee will look to make his mark in the ACC in sprint butterfly and freestyle events. He selected NC State over Maryland, Pittsburgh and Delaware.
Newell, a product of Charlotte, N.C., will help solidify the 200 butterfly for the Wolfpack while competing in a host of other events. Having competed under New South Swimming coach Jamie Thomas, Newell enjoyed a breakout year this past season with a strong showing at the junior nationals in California. He will study management and administration at NC State, having selected the Wolfpack program over East Carolina and UNC Wilmington.
