RALEIGH, N.C. - NC State head men's golf coach Richard Sykes has announced the signing of three golfers during the fall signing period. Wilson Day (Raleigh, N.C./Ravenscroft), Andrew Decker (Greenville, N.C.) and William Herring (Lillington, N.C.) will enroll for the fall 2011 semester.
"We signed three guys that will help us stay among the top-ranked programs in the country," said Sykes. "We're proud to continue the legacy this program has been built on by signing three more kids from the the state of North Carolina."
All three student-athletes rank among the top-26 golfers in the state according to the Golfweek/Sagarin Rankings. Day and Decker sit third and fourth, respectively, while Herring comes in at No. 26.
Day is the brother of current Wolfpack junior Chad Day. Wilson Day's accomplishments include winning the individual title at the 2010 TISAC Conference Championship. He was named all-state for the third time last week by the Carolinas Golf Association and the Tar Heel Youth Golf Association.
Day earned Golfweek magazine Player of the Week honors after winning the Joe Cheves Invitational in a playoff this past September at Mimosa Hills Country Club in Morganton, N.C. He shot -5 (71-68), and parred the first hole to win the three-way playoff.
He also won a Winternational Junior Series event over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend at Pinehust No. 8.
He won the 2008 North Carolina High School Invitational Tournament, and helped lead Ravenscroft to three-straight state titles (2007-09), and four consecutive TISAC Conference championships (2007-10).
Decker, a senior at J.H. Rose High School, also earned all-state honors for a second time last week by the Carolinas Golf Association and the Tar Heel Youth Golf Association.
Decker's resume includes being named 2010 Mideastern Conference Player of the Year. In 2009, the National Honor Society member was tabbed the Coastal Conference Player of the Year, and the J.H. Rose MVP.
Decker birdied the first playoff hole to win his first American Junior Golf Association title in August at National Golf Club in Southern Pines, N.C.
Herring, who grew up in Lillington, N.C., but moved to Lake Mary, Fla., this summer, was named second team All-Central Florida after leading his Lake Mary High School team to the 2010 Seminole Athletic Conference title in October.
A week later during the district tournament, he tied for medalist honors with a round of 70.
Herring, a former North Carolina state champion at Cape Fear Christian, was named to the all-state boy's team in 2008.
Herring earned medalist honors in the Golf Pride Junior Classic Sirixon Qualifier back in 2007. He carded a 4-under 68 to take home first place.
