RALEIGH, N.C. -
NC State volleyball was defeated by Wake Forest tonight in a home ACC contest. The loss drops the Wolfpack to 13-13 overall and 3-11 in league play, and brings the Demon Deacons to 15-9 and 8-6 in 2010.
Alex Smith earned her first double-double of the season, scoring 11 kills and 11 digs in the match to go along with one service ace, all while hitting at a .286 clip, second best on the squad. Margaret Salata added seven kills, and Luciana Shafer chipped in five for the Pack offensively. Also, Megan Cyr dished out 29 assists in addition to four kills and seven digs.
Thanks to two Wake Forest errors, NC State boasted a 2-0 lead to begin the match, but struggled to find an offensive rhythm, hitting at just a .056 attack percentage for the first set. Behind four Smith kills, the Pack battled, holding an 8-6 lead at one point. However, the squad dropped the opening frame by a score of 16-25.
The second set was the closest of the match, featuring 11 tied scores and five lead changes. After falling behind 13-16, Pack head coach Bryan Bunn used the squad’s first timeout of the game. Out of the timeout, after an Anna Moore kill, the Wolfpack pulled within one point, forcing the Demon Deacons to take a timeout of their own. NC State then fell behind 18-22, but battled back to make the score 21-23. After yet another Wake Forest timeout, NC State rattled off three straight points, but fell in the end 23-25.
In the final set, the Wolfpack earned its best attack percentage of the match, hitting at .235. However, the improved mark was not enough to best Wake Forest, which earned an impressive .471 clip for the game. The Pack did not hold a lead in the set despite five Smith and four Shafer kills. In the end, the Demon Deacons prevailed by a 17-25 score.
NC State returns to action Friday, Nov. 5 at 7 p.m. against Duke. The match will be played in Reynolds Coliseum, but for those who are not able to attend, it will also be broadcast live on GoPack.com.
