Wrestling Splits Dual Doubleheader

NC State split its first dual matches of the season Saturday, defeating Oklahoma City University 36-6, but falling 52-0 to eighth-ranked and host Oklahoma in Norman.
In the first match, the 24th-ranked Wolfpack won all nine of the contested matches vs. Oklahoma City, ranked No. 16 in the national NAIA rankings. NC State gave OCU a forfeit victory at 184 pounds. Juniors Mike Moreno, Darrius Little, Colton Palmer and Quinton Godley all continued their impressive starts to the 2010-11 campaign. Moreno improved to 12-1 at 125 pounds with a first-period pin of Kidd Gomez.
Little upped his record to 10-1 at 141 pounds, also winning by fall, taking out Kennis Wheeler at 6:34.
Palmer improved to 9-2 at 157 with a 6-2 decision over Mark Meyer, who came into the match with a 13-1 mark. Godley won a major decision at 174, 17-7 over Andrew Pontikes, his eighth victory in 10 bouts.
The second match was a mirror opposite of the first, with the Sooners winning all 10 bouts, including a forfeit at 184. The Wolfpack lost a heartbreaker at 141 pounds, with Little taking No. 1-ranked Zach Bailey to the wire before dropping a 7-6 decision.
Little was aggressive early and held a 4-2 lead after two takedowns in the first period, then led 4-3 after the second. Little made it 5-3 with an escape to begin the third period. Bailey tied the match at 5-5 with a takedown with 1:02 remaining, but Little escaped nine seconds later and carried a 6-5 lead into the final seconds. Bailey got the win on a takedown with eight seconds left.
NC State will return to action next weekend, Dec. 3-4, at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational.
