Swimming Gets Started at GT Invite

ATLANTA, Ga. - NC State swimming kicked off the first day of action at the Georgia Tech Invitational on Friday, Nov. 19, with the men ending the day in fifth-place (154.5 points) and the women standing eighth (77 points). The men's team hit an NCAA "B" cut in relay action, while the women's squad posted three top-10 all-time marks.
Joe Martin, Jonathan Boffa, Gaites Brown and Conor Brennan combined for a 1:21.52 in the 200-freestyle relay, taking third and hitting an NCAA "B" cut qualifying standard. Ian Bishop (1:52.25), Ivan Kopas (1:52.93), Kohl Hurdle (1:53.30) and Nick Schauer (1:56.41) all competed in the 200 IM finals, while Martin (20.82), Brennan (20.71), Brown (20:87), Boffa (20.81) and Barrett Miesfeld (21.15) did the same in the 50 freestyle finals. Kopas, Dan Forsythe, Miesfeld and Brennan swam a 3:20.44 for fifth in the 400-medley relay.
On the women's side Jennifer Kopenitz, Kaitlin Mills and Lauren Poore all posted top-10 all-time marks. Kopenitz's 2:03.49 in the 200 IM finals is second all-time in school history, while Mills' (56.25) and Poore's (56.96) 100 backstroke leadoff legs in the 400-medley relay are fourth and seventh all-time respectively in the Wolfpack record book. Mills, along with Jessica Ward, Zina Grogg and Julianna Prim, placed sixth in the 400-medley relay with a 3:48.62. Marifrances Henley took part in the 500 freestyle (5:00.44) and 50 freestyle (23.73) finals, while Morgan Roberson (23.71) and Allison Hendren (23.97) also swam in the 50 freestyle finale.
Action will continue at the Georgia Tech Invitational on Saturday, Nov. 20.
