RALEIGH, N.C. -
The NC State men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams will give friends, family, alums and fans a glimpse of the season ahead at its annual Red & White Scrimmage today, Friday, Oct. 8. Action will be held at the Willis R. Casey Aquatic Center on campus beginning at 5:30 p.m., with free admission offered to all fans of Wolfpack athletics.
A bevy of Wolfpack swimming and diving greats will be in attendance, including five Olympians, three Olympic medal winners and two national champions. David Fox, Steve Gregg, Dan Harrigan, Nick Paleocrassas and Dan Velez are all scheduled to attend.
Twelve new faces and a solid returning core highlight NC State head coach Brooks Teal’s 2010-11 men’s swimming and diving team. The Wolfpack returns 15 letterwinners from last year’s squad, which hit eight NCAA “B” cut qualifying standards, recorded five all-time top-10 swims and set one school record. Dan Forsythe set a school record in the 100 breaststroke and swam the fourth-best 200 breaststroke in program history, while Brandon Kingston posted top-10 all-time marks in the 1650 freestyle, 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle. Greg Baskwell, Ben Mechak and Sean Reams all have top-10 school marks of their own from previous tours of duty.
The 2010-11 NC State women’s swimming and diving team will look to build off of the momentum of its most successful season in several years. Eighteen letterwinners return from a year ago to form a nucleus that was responsible for 22 all-time top-10 marks, 11 NCAA “B” cut qualifying standards, and three school records. Ashley Richter set two school records, while Marifrances Henley set one of her own. Richter, Henley, Jen Kopenitz and Christina McCann have combined for 14 all-time top-10 swims, while Maggie McEnerney, Morgan Robertson, Katie Robinson, Meg Thompson, Jessica Ward and Erica Waters have supplied eight total. Eight newcomers will begin making their own stamp on the program.
In-depth season previews for both the men’s and women’s teams will be available on GoPack.com next week.
NC State men’s and women’s swimming and diving will officially begin its 2010-11 season at home next Saturday, Oct. 16, against Campbell and VMI. Competition is slated to start 12 noon.
