CHESTNUT HILL, MASS. -
NC State volleyball earned its third conference win Sunday, Oct. 31 by defeating Boston College in straight sets. The victory brings the Wolfpack above .500 for the 2010 season at 13-12 and 3-10 in ACC play, and also ties the 2008 squad with the most conference wins since 1999. The loss drops the Eagles to 8-18 and 0-13 this season.
The Pack’s offense recovered from its previous struggles, earning a .276 attack percentage in the match. Margaret Salata paced the squad, scoring 14 kills while hitting at a team-best .591 clip. Luciana Shafer continued to hit well, chipping in eight kills to go along with 10 digs. Freshman Anna Moore added six kills of her own in addition to five digs and a service ace. Also, Megan Cyr dished out a team-best 39 assists in the match.
Defensively, Kelly Wood corralled 19 digs, her third-best total of the season, while Alex Smith added eight. Salata tied her season-high, earning five block assists in the match, and Smith, Moore and Cyr chipped in two more apiece.
The Wolfpack fell behind in the first set, but earned its first lead 8-7 behind a Moore kill. The squad lost the lead again, and did not gain it back until 21-20, forcing a Boston College timeout. From that point, the Pack never looked back, and took the set 25-23 behind a .400 attack percentage.
NC State jumped out to a 15-10 lead in the second set, which caused Boston College to utilize two timeouts early. The squad capitalized on 10 Eagle errors, coupled with only nine kills, to dominate the set, winning by a score of 25-17.
In the final frame, the Pack earned an early lead of four points at its largest mark, but saw that lead slip away as Boston College tied the set at 21-21. The score bounced back-and-forth from there, including two ties in the short span. In the end, though, the Wolfpack took the game, 25-23.
NC State returns to action on Thursday, Nov. 4 at 7:30 p.m. against Wake Forest. Then, the Wolfpack will battle Duke on Friday, Nov. 5 at 7 p.m. Both matches will be held in Reynolds Coliseum and are free to the public.
