RALEIGH, N.C. -
After falling behind in the first half, the NC State men's soccer team scored two second half goals just two minutes apart to come away with a 2-1 win over visiting Navy Tuesday night at Dail Soccer Field. Navy (7-4-3) jumped out ahead in the 41st minute, but the Wolfpack (7-6-2) answered in the 73rd minute and netted the game winner in the 75th minute of play.
Navy scored the lone goal in the first half, a half that saw both teams combine for only five shots. The Midshipmen found the back of the net to break a scoreless tie in the 41st minute. Navy’s Sean Divoky took a free kick from around midfield, and after a bounce in the Pack penalty box, Patrick Sopko got his foot onto the pass for his third goal of the season at the 40:49 mark.
NC State’s best opportunity of the first half came in the 20th minute. Senior Chris Zuerner got to a loose ball in the Navy penalty box, but his shot was cleared off the goalline by a Navy defender.
The Pack came out aggressive in the second half, with freshman John Lung'aho hitting the crossbar in the 63rd minute.
NC State finally found the back of the net in the 73rd minute. Zuerner got the play started on the first goal, as he took a shot and hit the post, but sophomore Chandler Knox was in the middle of the box to clean up the rebound at the 72:49 mark.
The Pack then notched the gamewinner just over two minutes later. Lung'aho got his head on a Zane Tharakan throw-in, and his first goal of the season proved to be the game winner at the 74:55 mark.
NC State outshot Navy in the second half, 10-2.
With the win, NC State improves to 6-0 at home against non-conference foes this season.
