RALEIGH, N.C. - Paced by a one goal, one assist effort by Tyler Lassiter, NC State edged Coastal Carolina 3-1 Wednesday in a non-league soccer match at Dail Soccer Field.
The win brings the Wolfpack even at 6-6-2 on the year, and drops Coastal Carolina to 8-5-1.
Freshman Nader Jaibat opened the scoring by notching his second goal of the year in the 25th minute. Lassiter and sophomore Chandler Knox assisted on the goal, getting the ball into the box for Jaibat to deposit a shot from the right side.
Just before the half, senior Chris Zuerner added to the lead with an unassisted goal in the 43rd minute, his fifth of the season. Zuerner won the ball off of a throw in before breaking free and ripping a shot from straight away.
Coastal Carolina rebounded in the second half enough to give the Wolfpack cause for concern. In the 80th minute, Sean McCormick scored his first of the year off of a Luis Faz free kick. McCormick headed the ball off the post and into the net, scoring the Chanticleers only goal on the night.
Moments later, Pedro Ribeiro nearly tied the score with a header of his own that hit the crossbar, but glanced over the goal.
With NC State on the defensive, Lassiter rose to the occasion for the game-clinching goal. In the 86th minute, Lassiter won a clearance between two defenders at midfield.
The Wake Forest, N.C., native made a run with a Chanticleer defender tugging at his jersey that ended with his team-leading sixth goal of the season, enough to give NC State the 3-1 victory.
Junior Will Mackvick earned the win in goal with one save on the contest. Coastal Carolina's Scott Angevine picked up two saves in the loss.
The Chanticleers outshot the Wolfpack 10-7 on the night, and had six corner kicks to NC State's one.
In a physical contest between the two clubs, NC State and Coastal Carolina combined for five yellow cards and 36 fouls.
The Wolfpack hosts Navy next Tuesday at 7 p.m.
