RALEIGH, N.C. -
NC State volleyball dropped a hard-fought match tonight against Florida State 3-1, which marks the first time since 2006 the Wolfpack has taken a set from the Seminoles. The loss moves the Pack to 11-5 overall and 1-3 in the ACC, but elevates Florida State to 4-1 in conference play, and 12-3 in the 2010 season.
Margaret Salata paced the NC State offense, scoring 13 kills to go along with two service aces in the match. Also earning double-digit kills was Becah Fogle with 12 and five digs. Freshman Anna Moore notched a career-high eight kills on the night, in addition to two digs and two assisted blocks.
Megan Cyr earned her fifth double-double of the season, contributing 33 assists and 11 digs to go along with a season-high six kills, all the while pacing the squad with a .500 attack percentage.
Defensively, three Wolfpack players notched double-digit kills—Alex Smith (12), Kelly Wood (12) and Cyr (11). The Pack earned eight total team blocks, including four assisted blocks by Salata and three by freshman Meredith Richardson.
In the first set, NC State got off to a slow start, falling behind 1-6 before a Salata and Shafer block got the Pack on the board. The Wolfpack pulled to within five thanks to a Cyr kill, which made the score 4-9. Overall, the squad struggled to find a rhythm, and eventually lost the set 12-25, posting a .031 attack percentage.
The Wolfpack made the necessary adjustments in the second set, despite falling to an early 3-5 deficit. A Richardson and Moore tandem block knotted the score at six, the third tie of the set. Following a clear shift in momentum, Florida State later called a timeout with the score tied 11-11. Out of the timeout, the Pack responded, utilizing an Elena Frac service ace and three team kills to take a 16-13 lead, forcing the Seminoles to take their final timeout of the set. The score continued to bounce back-and-forth, but the Wolfpack eventually dropped the set 23-25, despite drastically improving its attack percentage (.200) in the frame.
Following the break between sets two and three, NC State came out strong, jumping out to a 6-2 lead, thanks to four Pack kills and two Seminole errors. After back-to-back Richardson and Fogle blocks, the Wolfpack boasted an 8-3 advantage over the Noles and continued to pound out kills, scoring 14 in the set. NC State held the lead the entire set, and ended up winning 25-21, making the overall match score 1-2.
Florida State earned a comfortable 6-1 lead to open the fourth set, forcing NC State head coach Bryan Bunn to use an early timeout. Luciana Shafer then pounded out a kill and service ace, bringing the score to 3-6. The Wolfpack later took a 12-10 lead, but Florida State responded with a 3-0 run, making the score 12-13. From that point, the Seminoles maintained the lead, eventually taking the set 25-19.
Overall, the match featured a total of 19 tied scores and six lead changes—a closely fought battle throughout.
NC State returns to Reynolds Coliseum Sunday, Oct. 3 at 1 p.m. to take on Miami.
