RALEIGH, N.C. - - NC State volleyball got its first win in 12 tries over Miami on Sunday, Oct. 3, with a 3-0 shutout at Reynolds Coliseum. The decision pushes the new-look Wolfpack to 12-5 (2-3 ACC) on the year, while the Hurricanes fall to 13-3 (2-3 ACC).
The win is a rather historic one for the Pack, as it marks the first time since 1996 that the program has picked up two or more straight-set wins in ACC play. It's also the first time since 1995 that the program has won shutouts against more than one conference program in the same year. The Pack topped Boston College 3-0 earlier this season at Reynolds Coliseum on Sept. 24
Becah Fogle led the roster with 10 kills, while Megan Cyr had 31 assists. Four student-athletes - Kelly Wood (19), Cyr (11), Luciana Shafer (11) and Alex Smith (10) combined for 51 of the team's 63 digs, and Margaret Salata had five blocks.
NC State took the opening set, 26-24, grabbing the first three points and holding the lead until back-to-back Wolfpack attack errors knotted the score at 24-all. A Ryan Shaffer service error immediately put the Pack back ahead at 25-24 before a Fogle kill slammed the door on the opener.
The Wolfpack led by as many as six points at 10-4, but Miami runs of three, four and three more points tightened play down the stretch. Fogle landed five kills, while Smith, Luciana Shafer and Salata added three each.
NC State led throughout set two, taking a 25-22 decision. An Ali Becker attack error put the Pack up early at 6-1, forcing the Hurricanes to call a timeout from the bench. Miami would later signal for a second conference following a Christine Williamson kill at 13-5.
The Canes returned with three consecutive scores, but NC State would eventually stretch its lead to 19-12 with a four-point rally. Miami responded by taking five of the next six points, cutting the Pack's lead to 20-17 and forcing head coach Bryan Bunn to call time. Both teams continued to trade blows until Bunn signaled for another break following a Shafer attack error at 23-22. Salata then answered with a kill, and a bad set from Katie Gallagher gave the Pack the lone point it needed.
NC State had to fend off a resilient Miami corps in the third and final set, with the Pack not grabbing its first lead until 15-14 on a Brie Merriwether kill. An Alex Johnson attack error made it 24-20, but the Canes rattled off two more scores before a Lane Carico attack error sealed the deal at 25-22.
The third stanza featured seven tied scores and four lead changes before the Pack called it a day.
NC State will hit the road for its next four bouts - all conference affairs.
