RALEIGH, N.C. – The NC State swimming and diving team used arguably its strongest combined performance in recent memory to sweep Clemson in a crucial ACC meet on Senior Day at Casey Natatorium on campus.
The men grabbed a 176.5-121.5 decision, while the women scored a 176-124 victory. Both teams combined to claim 24 of the 32 events, with each squad winning 12. Anna Linkenauger and Marifrances Henley each had four wins for the women, while Conor Brennan and Brandon Kingston each had three for the men.
The Wolfpack men move to 5-1 (3-1 ACC) with the victory, as the women climb to 7-1 (3-1 ACC).
Morgan Robertson, Linkenauger, Patrice Dason and Henley got the women going in the 400-medley relay, taking first with a 3:49.10. Linkenauger then won the 1000 freestyle on a 10:15.53 before Henley swiped first in the 200 freestyle with a 1:51.42. Robertson (56.88), Jen Kopenitz (57.73) and Alli Hagan (58.67) took second, third and fourth in the 100 backstroke, while Tracy Rorer (1:05.47) and Jessica Ward (1:06.59) placed first and second in the 100 breaststroke.
Maresa Like-Mathews (2:03.33) and Maggie McEnerney (2:04.91) took first and third in the 200 butterfly, as Ashley Richter (23.76) and Dason (24.01) placed second and third in the 50 freestyle. Hannah Hopkins followed with a season-best 275.55 in the 1-meter dive, while Richter’s 51.33 in the 100 freestyle was good for second. Kopenitz’s 2:03.78 won the 200 backstroke, as did Linkenauger’s 2:20.10 in the 200 breaststroke.
Henley (5:00.60) and Sarah Merritt (5:03.63) padded the Pack’s lead by placing first and third in the 500 freestyle, while Dason (55.18) posted the top 100 butterfly of the season for another win as Meg Thompson (58.12) took fourth. Hopkins then won the 3-meter dive with a 298.20, while Kirstyn Shepler’s 248.78 placed her third. Linkenauger grabbed a final victory, taking the 200 IM with a 2:05.62, just before Richter, Brianna Grover, Dason and Henley’s 3:27.23 won the 400-freestyle relay.
Gaites Brown, Dan Forsythe, Matt Voell and Brennan recorded a season-best 3:23.06 in the 400-medley relay to take first, which Kingston followed by winning the 1000 freestyle on a 9:29.35. Kevin Woodhull-Smith then took third in the 200 freestyle with a 1:41.90, Brown (51.80) and Nick Schauer (52.31) finished third and fourth in the 100 backstroke. Forsythe (56.95), Greg Baskwell (58.44) and Steven Wright (59.46) then made a huge push for the Wolfpack, grabbing the top three spots in the 100 breaststroke.
Mike Seiferth posted a personal-best in the 200 butterfly, and top’s on the team this season, winning with a 1:50.53, while Brennan’s 21.00 was good for second in the 50 freestyle. Hudson Rains then won the 1-meter dive on a 315.98 score, while Chris Arcara took third with a 225.83. Brennan (46.07), Brown (47.05) and Travis Martinez (47.23) placed first, third and fifth in the 100 freestyle.
Woodhull-Smith (1:50.63) and Ben Mechak (1:53.26) finished second and fourth in the 200 backstroke, before Forsythe (2:05.48) and Baskwell (2:07.12) grabbed first and second in the 200 breaststroke. Kingston followed by winning the 500 freestyle on a 4:32.77, while Matt Voell (50.43) and Seiferth (50.44) had the two fastest swims in the 100 butterfly. Rains used a 352.20 to grab another victory, this time in the 3-meter dive, just before Woodhull-Smith (1:52.17) and Baskwell (1:52.92) recorded the two best swims for the Pack on the season in placing first and second in the 200 IM. Brennan, Martinez, Brown and Kingston shut the door on the met by taking the 400-frreestyle relay in 3:03.84.
NC State will return to action in its regular season finale at North Carolina in nearby Chapel Hill on Friday, Feb. 5. Action is slated to begin at 6 p.m.
