Swimming & Diving Splits at GT

ATLANTA, Ga. – NC State swimming and diving split its conference meet at Georgia Tech on Saturday, Jan. 16, with the Wolfpack women winning (184-110) and the men falling (167-131). The victory moves the women to 5-1 (2-1 ACC), while the men’s squad (3-1, 2-1 ACC) suffers its first loss of the season.
Maresa Like-Mathews led the women by recording the third-fastest swim in school history en route to winning the 200 butterfly with a 2:02.60. Jen Kopenitz (2:05.06) followed in second, while Maggie McEnerney (2:05.83) took fourth. Morgan Robertson, Anna Linkenauger, Patrice Dason and Marifrances Henley won the 400-medley relay with a 3:48.71, while Linkenauger’s 10:14.90 was tops in the 1000 freestyle. Henley then claimed the 200 freestyle on a 1:51.03, while Robertson (58.60) and Brianna Grover (58.90) placed third and fourth in the 100 backstroke.
Linkenauger (1:05.06), Meg Thompson (1:05.95) and Tracy Rorer (1:05.99) took the top three spots in the 100 breaststroke, before Ashley Richter’s 23.86 won the 50 freestyle. Hannah Hopkins’ 251.10 in the 1-meter was good for second, while Kirstyn Shepler’s 242.18 placed her third. Richter then won the 100 freestyle with a 51.53, while Kopenitz used a 202.62 to claim the 200 backstroke.
Linkenauger (2:21.26), Christina McCann (2:22.49) and Jessica Stewart (2:26.95) took first, second and fourth in the 200 breaststroke, while Henley (5:01.65), Sarah Merritt (5:03.88) and McEnerney (5:04.55) took first, second and fourth in the 500 freestyle. Dason’s 55.97 won the 100 butterfly, and Kopenitz won the 400 IM with a 4:29.45 while Like-Mathews (4:31.06) and Merritt (4:31.41) took second and third. Richter, Dason, Grover and Henley ended things by taking the 400-freestyle relay with a 3:26.16.
On the men’s side, Gaites Brown, Dan Forsythe, Matt Voell and Conor Brennan took second in the 400-medley relay on a 3:24.79, while Brandon Kingston (9:25.33) won the 1000 freestyle and Mason McGee (1:40.46) took first in the 200 freestyle.
Hudson Rains placed first in the 1-meter dive with a 310.13, later taking second in the 3-meter dive on a 338.85. Brennan won the 100 freestyle with a 46.05, and Kevin Woodhull-Smith (1:51.26) and Ben Mechak (1:53.28) took first and second in the 200 backstroke. The Wolfpack also got first-place finishes from Kingston (4:37.25) in the 500 freestyle, and Travis Martinez, McGee, Brown and Brennan (3:04.83) in the 400-freestyle relay.
Next week NC State will host both East Carolina (Jan. 20) and Clemson (Jan. 23) at Casey Natatorium.
