RALEIGH, N.C. – Sophomore forward Tanya Cain scored three goals to lead the NC State women’s soccer team to a 4-1 victory over Davidson on a Friday night from rain soaked Dail Soccer Field.
Cain would capitalize on NC State’s first real scoring chance of the night in the 13th minute when sophomore Paige Dugal served a pass to Cain and she lofted a shot that the Davidson keeper barely got her finger tips on, but the momentum of the slick ball continued towards the net and it ultimately went over the goal line for her second marker of the season.
Cain struck the back of the net moments later when a fortunate bounce found her feet. Once she was steady with the ball, she cut once to the left and ripped a shot through the keepers legs for a 2-0 advantage at the 15:34 mark of the first half.
“The last three games and even the exhibition she’s (Cain) been so good on the ball”, said head coach Steve Springthorpe. “She’s breaking people down and is so quick around the box and now she’s starting to get a few shots off.”
Freshman Kara Blosser scored for the second time this week when she blasted a shot off a deflection from just over 10 yards out at 40:18 to make it 3-0 Wolfpack heading to halftime.
Davidson finally put a goal on the scoreboard in the 62nd minute when Amanda Flink cleaned up deflection off a free kick to cut the lead to 3-1.
Cain erased any thoughts of a comeback when she scored her third goal of the night less than two minutes later to put the finishing touches on a memorable night for the Pinebluff, N.C., native.
“I just really want to go out and score,” said Cain. We have been working really hard in practice to shoot and everyone around me was telling me to shoot and scoring wins games. I just really want to see it (ball) hit the back of the net.”
And though the Wolfpack improved to 3-0 with tonight’s win, Cain understands there is still a full season ahead for her club.
“We still have a lot to prove. We’re working hard and were making improvements, but we still have along way to go.”
Davidson had an opportunity in the ninth minute to take an early lead when Kyri Bye-Nagel shook free from the Wolfpack defense and got a shot on net that Kern was able to push wide. However, Callan Elswick got a foot on the deflections and rang her sliding shot off the post and the Pack cleared away any further damage.
“As a new coach and a new coaching staff coming in (to this season) we’re excited about the direction of the team and how hard the girls are working”, added Springthorpe. “To get three results (wins) in the first three games is good and were certainly happy about it.”
Ironically, the last hat trick for the Wolfpack also came against Davidson when former star Lindsay Vera turned the trick in the 2007 season opener, a 5-1 NC State victory.
The Wolfpack returns to the pitch next Thursday against UNLV at Dail Soccer Field at 5 p.m.
