Women's Soccer Falls 1-0 on Penalty Kick

RALEIGH, N.C. – A second half penalty kick was the deciding factor for UNLV in a 1-0 win over NC State Thursday evening from Dail Soccer Field.
Shannon Hughes converted the penalty kick after NC State (3-1) was whistled for a handball inside the box in the 80th minute and that was the difference in a tough, hard fought match.
“I thought UNLV did the job coming in here and defending hard and playing aggressive,” said NC State head coach Steve Springthorpe. “They came in prepared and they got their goal.”
The match was a homecoming for UNLV (2-1-1) head coach Kat Mertz. Now in her fifth season with the Rebels, she was the Wolfpack's goalkeeper from 1994-97.
The best scoring chance for both teams in the first half came in the first two minutes of action. After a shot by Katherine Orellana went just wide in the opening minute, NC State’s Paige Dugal ripped a shot that went just over the cross bar at the 2:04 mark.
The rest of the half was a struggle for supremacy. Kim Kern hauled in three shots in the first 45 minutes, but most of the shots came from beyond the 18-yard box.
Likewise at the other end, Rebel goalie Alicia Lugo made just one save off a shot from Chantalle Dugas in the 10th minute.
“Today I don’t know if we had a good enough rythem,” added Springthorpe. “So we need to learn from it and move on because we have Stony Brook right here on Sunday.
“You have to take them as they are and learn from the game and move on the next game and play a little bit better.”
