RALEIGH, N.C. – Former Olympians and NC State swimmers Cullen Jones and Dan Velez will compete at the FINA Swimming World Championships this week in Rome, Italy. The event, held every two years, is second only to the Olympics in bringing together the world's best competitive swimmers. Action will be held Sunday, July 26 through Saturday, Aug. 2.
Universal Sports will carry a live and on-demand broadcast of the entire competition. Online coverage can be found via the Universal Sports website.
"Both Dan and Cullen took a well deserved break after their success in Beijing, but are now back in top shape and ready to continue to compete with the best in the world,” said NC State head swimming and diving coach Brooks Teal. “The Wolfpack nation is very proud of both of these athletes and we all wish them well in Rome."
Jones, an Olympic Gold medalist for Team USA at the 2008 Olympic games in Beijing in the men’s 4x100 relay, will swim the 50 freestyle and serve as a relay alternate. Early this month he set a new American record with a 21.41 in the 50 freestyle at the 2009 Conoco Phillips National Championships in Indianapolis, Ind. Jones also competed for the USA at the 2007 World Championships in Melbourne, Australia.
Velez, who swam for Puerto Rico in Beijing, will swim the 100 breaststroke and the 200 breaststroke. He swam a 1:01.80 to win the third heat and stake a new Puerto Rican record during the 100 breaststroke prelims at the Olympics.
