BIRMINGHAM, ALA. NC State sophomore Matt Hill has been named the Southern Golf Association’s National Amateur of the Month for May, making the second time in three months he has won the prestigious honor.
By winning both his assigned NCAA regional and the NCAA Division I Championship to complete a record-setting collegiate season, Hill was a near-unanimous pick by the 15-man national selection panel of golf coaches, officials and journalists.
Hill, 20, from Bright Grove, Ontario, Canada, charged into medalist honors at the NCAA championship with three birdies over the closing holes. His 6-under-par total of 207 left him two shots clear of Clemson ace Kyle Stanley and a star-studded field at the famed Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio.
Two weeks earlier, the first-team All-American was low man with 4-under 212 in the NCAA Central Regional at Olde Stone Club in Alvaton, KY. The two victories gave him eight wins for the school year, smashing the old Atlantic Coast Conference single-season record of five.
The 107-year-old Southern Golf Association promotes amateur golf in a variety of ways, including the staging of the prestigious Southern Amateur Championship, the 103rd edition scheduled in July at Colonial CC in Memphis.
