Mebane Named Assistant WBB Coach

RALEIGH, N.C. Head women’s basketball coach Kellie Harper completed her first coaching staff at NC State with the hiring of assistant coach Walter Mebane.
Mebane was the head coach the last five years at Hampton University, compiling a 70-77 record, and spent 10 years total with the Lady Pirates program.
During his stint as the head coach at Hampton, his best season came in 2007-08 with an 18-13 record, while his squad went 16-16 last year.
Mebane first arrived at HU in 1996, where he served as the Director of Basketball Operations for the men’s basketball program. During the second half of the 1996-97 season, Mebane joined the women’s basketball team as an assistant coach. At the conclusion of that season, he returned to the men’s program, where he stayed until offered a position as an assistant women’s coach in 1998.
Prior to arriving at Hampton, Mebane served as the Director of Athletics as well as a basketball coach for boys’ varsity at Atlantic Shores High School in nearby Chesapeake, Va.
From 1987-94, Mebane coached at Pace Academy in Atlanta, Ga., and also served as Director of Multicultural Affairs.
Mebane is a native of Durham, N.C., and received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Industrial Relations and Education from the University of North Carolina in 1981.
He has one daughter, Carrie Alexis.
