TOLEDO, OHIO After shooting a two-under (69) in first round action on Tuesday, sophomore Matt Hill sits tied atop the leaderboard at the 112th NCAA Championships taking place this week at the Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio. Playing in the afternoon session, Hill used a two-under on the front-nine and was one of only eight of the 156 golfers to shoot a round under par.
Hill is currently tied with Jonathan Bowers of Northwestern and Scott Langley of Illinois for the individual lead after 18 holes.
“I feel like I put myself in really good position and I was happy with the way I played. It was tough finishing with a bogey but I have a lot of confidence going into tomorrow. The wind was tough and I just tried to hit some low shots. I hit my driver maybe five or six times and tried to keep it out of the wind as much as possible.”
Hill started his day on the first hole, and recorded a par on the first three holes of his round. Hill would then come through with birdies on two of the next three holes, as his birdies on No. 4 and No. 6 were sandwich around another birdie on No. 5. Hill would then shoot par on the final three holes of his first nine holes. He used two birdies and no holes over pat to shoot a two-under on the front-nine.
Hill would then make the turn, and add a birdie on No. 10 but follow that up with his first bogey of the day on No. 11. After another par, Hill would record his four birdie of the day on No. 13. After a par on holes 14-17, Hill finished with a bogey on the 18th hole. He would end with an even-par on the back-nine.
Hill will be in the morning group tomorrow, as he tees off at 8:55 a.m. Live stats are available at golfstat.com.
