RALEIGH, N.C. Sophomore Matt Hill will attempt to make school history this week, as he tries to become the first Wolfpack golfer to win medalist honors at NCAA Championships. After winning the NCAA Central Regional last weekend, Hill has advanced to the 2009 NCAA Championships to be held at the Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio, May 27-29.
Hill will be the first individual the Pack has sent to the NCAA Championships since Tim Clark in 1998, the Pack as a team has gone to the NCAAs a total of four times in that span. NC State has had a total of three different golfers bring home top-10 finishes at the NCAA Championships over the years; Tim Clark was fifth in 1996, 10th in 1997 and seventh in 1998, Justin Walters placed sixth in 2002, and most recently Jason Moon was 10th in 2003.
Hill has had the best year of golf in ACC history, as he claimed victory at seven tournaments this school year, breaking the previous ACC of five tournament wins in a school year. His spring season has been even more impressive, as Hill has won six of the last seven tournaments he has played in, including four straight.
On the season, Hill leads the Pack with a stroke average of 70.0 for the school year. In the 12 tournaments this season, he has finished in the top-10 a total of 10 times, and has finished no lower than 14th overall. In his 32 rounds played, Hill has been under par 24 times and at even par three times.
Hill will play a round of 18 each of the next three days. Hill will tee off on Tuesday at 2:05 p.m. and on Wednesday at 8:55 a.m. Tee times for the final round will be determined after the first two rounds are complete.
