Men's Golf 2nd at ACCs After Opening Round

NEW LONDON, N.C. NC State started its quest for the 2009 ACC Men’s Golf Championship in strong fashion, as the Pack currently sits in second place just one stroke off the team lead. No. 18 NC State shot a six-under (282) in the first round on Friday at the Old North State Club in New London, N.C.
No. 9 Georgia Tech finished the first round with the lead at seven-under (281). NC State holds a four-stroke lead ahead of No. 3 Clemson in third place at two-under, and No. 23 Florida State is fourth at one-under. Only four teams finished the first round under-par.
The Pack had three golfers shoot under-par in the first round, and all three are currently in the top-10 in the individual standings.
Sophomore Matt Hill leads the way for the Pack, as he is currently in third place at four-under (68). Hill currently sits just one stroke out of the individual lead.
In Friday’s first round, Hill started strong with an eagle on the first hole, a par-five, and added two birdies as well. Hill shot a three-under on the front-nine, and had no holes over par on the day.
Sophomore Brandon Detweiler finished his day strong, and jumped up into sixth place as he shot a two-under (70). Detweiler fired a three-under on the back nine, with four birdies including two on the final three holes. For the round of 18, Detweiler had a team-high five birdies.
Junior Brad Revell was the Pack’s third golfer under par, as he shot a one-under (71) and is in ninth place. Revell had three birdies and shot a two-under on the front-nine.
Senior Andrew Byrd carded a one-over (73) in his round, but his 18 holes out strong. Byrd had a total of three birdies, but two of those came on the last three holes. He shot a one-under on the back-nine.
Senior Darren Blair had a tough round, as he was six-over (78) on the day. Blair ran into trouble on his front-nine, as he had three bogies and one double bogey on holes No. 5-9, but came back strong on the back-nine with only one hole over par.
The ACC Championships will continue tomorrow with the second round, and the third round will be held on Sunday.
