M. Tennis Falls in Close ACC Quarterfinal Match

CARY, N.C. - It was a day of close matches at the ACC tournament quarterfinals for the No. 54 NC State men's tennis team, but No. 25 Miami won the match 4-3, on Friday, April 17, in Cary, N.C. The Hurricanes won the doubles point and two singles matches as the Pack won three singles matches, to leave the match up to the No. 5 singles. The Hurricanes came out on top, moving Miami to 14-7 on the season, and NC State fell to 10-15.
Senior Jay Weinacker and freshman Jaime Pulgar were the only Pack duo to win their doubles match, defeating David Simon and Christian Blocker, 8-2, at No. 2. The win was the 18th for the pair this season, becoming only the second duo in NC State history to win that many doubles matches in a season. The win was also Weinacker's 87th doubles victory, tying him for the most career doubles victories in Pack history.
The 56th ranked team of Daniel Vallverdu and David Rosenfeld defeated the 74th-ranked team of senior Christian Welte and redshirt freshman Julian Sullivan, 8-2, at the top singles spot. Miami claimed the early advantage when Keith Crowley and Carl Sundberg took down sophomores Rob Lowe and David Chermak, 8-5, at No. 3.
Pulgar was the first to win his singles match for the Pack, overpowering Blocker, 6-2, 6-0, at No. 4, but Miami regained the lead with a victory by Ignacio Taboada, 6-1, 6-3, at No. 6 over Chermak.
Welte beat Rosenfeld, 7-5, 6-4, at No. 2 singles, and senior Derek Stephens helped the Pack take a 3-2 lead with a straight set victory over 113th-ranked Sundberg, 6-2, 6-3, win at No. 3.
Vallverdu, ranked 13th in the nation, defeated 37th-ranked Weinacker in the third set, 6-3, 1-6, 6-3, at the top singles spot, leaving the deciding point to the No. 5 singles.
Sullivan, who dominated the first set, 6-1, fell to Crowley in the second set, 6-4, sending the contest into a third. After trading games back and forth, Crowley managed to win two straight games to win the final set 7-5, and allow the Hurricanes to advance to the tournament semifinals.
The men's tennis team will now wait to hear if it is selected for the NCAA tournament later this month, and if any players are chosen for the individual championships.
