Softball Completes Sweep of Elon, 7-2

RALEIGH, N.C. NC State used two big innings to complete a doubleheader sweep of Elon with a 7-2 victory in the second game at the Curtis & Jacqueline Dail Softball Stadium on Tuesday, March 31.
The Pack now stands at 18-13, while the Phoenix dip to 9-16.
Mendy McKenzie (7-5) got the win in relief, hurling three scoreless and hitless frames and picking up five K’s. Morgan Peeler started the evening, lasting four innings and giving up four hits.
Lauren Taylor (0-3) suffered the loss, allowing three earned runs. Pam DelPizzo came on in relief for Elon in the sixth but only recorded two outs while allowing four earned runs before Taylor resumed her initial role.
Alyssa Ishibashi, Hannah Ojeda and Kristine Bechtholdt all drove in two runs, while Lauren Peters had an RBI of her own. Allbritten, Bechtholdt and Eliza Jacobellis each had two hits.
Kaitlyn Piazzolla drove one out of the yard on a full count in the top of the second, lifting Elon to an early 1-0 advantage. Patti Weber made it 2-0 with a solo shot of her own in the top of the fourth.
The long ball worked in the Pack’s favor in the bottom of the fifth as State took a 3-2 lead on two home runs of its own. Bechtholdt cranked out a solo blast to cut the score in half and Jacobellis singled on a rocket back to the circle. Ishibashi then hit one on a line over the wall in center, giving the red and white its first lead of the game.
The Pack added four more runs in the bottom of the sixth as Ojeda dropped a two-run triple into left and later scored on an RBI double from Bechtholdt. Lauren Peters eventually brought Bechtholdt across the plate with a single to center.
NC State will host Radford for two games this Thursday, April 2, at the Curtis & Jacqueline Dail Softball Stadium beginning at 4 p.m. GoPack.com will carry live stats for both affairs.
