CLEARWATER, Fla. Mendy McKenzie struck out a season-high 13 batters and allowed just three hits as NC State topped Ball State, 2-0, in its first game at the USF Under Armour Invitational on Friday, March 6. Kristine Bechtholdt hit her team-leading third home run of the year as McKenzie moved to 2-2.
NC State now stands at 5-6, while the Cardinals dip to 2-6. Eliza Milian (2-3) suffered the loss for BSU.
Ball State had runners on first and second in the top of the third, but State held them at bay. Kam Holle reached on a fielder’s choice and Allie Pennock beat out an infield single before stealing second, but McKenize got Alicia Barkley to ground out to second.
Bechtholdt’s third jack of the season put the Pack up 2-0 in the bottom of the fourth. Bridget Desbois reached on an errant throw from short and Bechtholdt followed by pasting one just beyond the fence down the line in left.
State dodged a major bullet in the top of the sixth. Lisa Rozanski took a pitch to the hand and Pennock blooped a single into shallow left. Both runners then advanced on a double steal, putting runners at second and third with no outs. But Barkley lined out to second and Alyssa Ishibashi doubled up Rozanski at third, giving the red and white some breathing room. Jen Reifschneider then grounded out to the circle, allowing the Pack escaped unscathed.
NC State will stay on the field to take on Illinois Chicago shortly.
