RALEIGH, N.C. Jim Umbdenstock stands as one of the most storied swimmers in the history of the NC State program. Way before the days of speedy suits and lightening-fast pools, Umbdenstock was breaking records, winning titles and making waves for the Wolfpack.
A four-time All-America selection, Umbdenstock held a share of the 100 butterfly school record for 30 years after hitting a 48.36 at the 1979 ACC Championships. That mark was recently topped by Taylor Goodwin at the 2009 ACC Championships some three decades later.
All told, Umbdenstock won five ACC individual titles, including four-straight in the 100 butterfly. He swam a 49.62 at the 1976 ACC Championships, followed by a 49.97 in 1977. A year later he posted a 48.93 while also grabbing the 50 freestyle title on a 20.78. His historic 48.36 was tops in the 100 butterfly at the championship meet in 1979.
His incredible swims and talents were noticed nationwide, culminating in All-America honors during all four years of his career in the red and white between 1976-79.
Umbdenstock was forever cemented as one of the greatest swimmers in conference history when he was named to the ACC 50th Anniversary Team along with 18 other men’s and women’s swimmers combined from NC State in August 2002.
To this day Umbdenstock remains a Wolfpacker through and through, volunteering as a meet official at nearly every home swimming and diving meet.
